Homeschooling
means so many things to a variety of different people, but in simplest terms home schooling is the act of teaching one's children at home as opposed to sending them to traditional schools such as public, private, parochial or charter schools.

Legal in all 50 states, homeschooling is one of the fastest growing educational alternatives in the United States. According to the National Center for Education Statistics there are now  1.1 million home schooled children in America. Black children make up about 10 percent of that total averaging around 100,000 -110,000 black home schooled children across the country today.

Homeschooling, depending upon the state, falls under many different categories and levels of regulation. Some states classify homeschooling as an extension of state education and have very strict home schooling laws. Others classify it along with other non-public education choices. Some states place homeschooling in the same category as private schools, while others are very lenient and impose little to no homeschool regulations for parents to follow.

It is important that as a parent you know exactly what the law says in your state in order to be fully in compliance with your state's homeschooling laws.

Homeschooling also encompasses a variety of different perspectives, philosophies and educational styles. You can learn more about them in our resources section.
