By now you've probably heard about the high educational adeptness and aptitude of home schooled children. And, it's all true! Based on recent statistics and studies, we now know home schooled children's educational progress is -- in large part -- higher than their public school counterparts. We have also witnessed the prolific instances of home schooled children who are entering and winning national academic competitions. That said, it goes without saying that teaching one's children at home is one of the most effective educational models in the United States today.

Below you will find a listing of national homeschool statistics. You will also see how black home schooled children fare when compared to their public schooled counterparts and white home schooled students.

ACT

* Math is the only subject where home schooled students did not perform better than their public schooled peers.

To our knowledge -- and we are very thorough about these things -- there has only been one study that looked at how well black home schooled students perform in reading and math compared to other homeschoolers and to their black public schooled peers. Here's what they found.

At A Glance

White and minority 8th grade homeschoolers both scored at the 87th percentile in reading and minorities trailed whites in math by a mere five points. These figures were concluded by a longitudinal study conducted by Brian Ray of the National Home Education Research Institute in 1997. 63% of the minorities in this study were black and Hispanic.
